ORIENTATION attendance and participation
policies and procedures
The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law) requires all newly admitted students to participate in a comprehensive orientation program designed to support their transition into law school and the legal profession.
Orientation Overview
UDC Law's orientation is a structured, multi-day program that introduces incoming students to the academic environment, faculty, staff, and fellow classmates. It provides essential information on the school's mission, academic expectations, and available resources. While specific details for Orientation 2025 have not been publicly released, previous orientations have included:
Professional Identity Dinner: A formal event designed to introduce students to the values, expectations, and responsibilities of the legal profession. It typically serves as a cornerstone event during orientation and supports students in beginning to develop their professional identity as future lawyers.
Induction Ceremony: A formal event where students receive lapel pins and affirm their commitment to the legal profession and public service.
Workshops and Sessions: Covering topics such as academic success strategies, wellness programs, and student organizations.
Administrative Processes: Assistance with residency status updates, payment plans, and registration procedures.
Registration and Preparation
First-year students are responsible for self-enrolling in their prescribed courses through the university's online portal, my.udc.edu. Enrollment typically opens in November for the upcoming spring semester.
Attendance
All first-year students are expected to attend and participate in all orientation activities. Orientation officially begins with the Professional Identity and UDC Law Traditions Dinner, a welcome event for all incoming students held in the evening. Following this dinner, orientation will continue with separate tracks:
Day Program for incoming full-time students
Evening Program for incoming part-time students
Please Note: While most sessions are divided by program type, there may be select days where both full-time and part-time students are required to attend joint sessions.
